Week 2 Updates and Important Information

Dear King Traditional Families,

Week one flew by! It has been wonderful to see our students settled, engaged in learning, and quickly becoming part of the King Traditional community.  Normally I would only send out a newsletter once a month...but with so many things happening I will probably send a weekly update for the month of September.

At our Welcome Back Assembly, we reviewed our school expectations and discussed what it means to be a member of the King Traditional School community. Referring to this month's virtue of RESPECT, we talked about:

Students were asked to brainstorm words they felt should describe a King Traditional student. Their responses included helpful, respectful, kind, honest, responsible, and caring. I was incredibly proud of their thoughtful discussions with peers and am truly honored to be the Principal of such a wonderful school community.

Below are a few important upcoming dates to note:

Wednesday, September 16
Meet the Teacher (Grades 1–5)
5:00 PM – 6:00 PM
This is a drop-in event where families can visit classrooms and meet teachers. Please note that we have only just begun the school year, so teachers are not yet prepared to discuss student progress. Opportunities for these conversations will be available during our October parent conferences.

Monday, September 21
Kindergarten Students Attend Full-Time
Beginning September 21, our Kindergarten students will attend school full-time. Please be aware that the parking lot may be busier as additional families join our daily drop-off and pick-up routines.

Monday, September 21
Terry Fox Run
Students will participate in our annual Terry Fox Run. We invite students to bring a toonie donation in support of the Terry Fox Foundation.  Mrs. Benner Rae will send out more information about this event.

Friday, September 25
Non-Instructional Day
There will be no school for students.

PAC will also be starting their first fundraiser the Week of Sept 21st.  Watch for information about this.

All parents and guardians are welcome to attend.

Wednesday, September 30
National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
There will be no school for students as we recognize and reflect on this important day.

It is the District's policy that if your child gets sick at school they MUST be picked up immediately.  Please make sure we have up to date contact/pick up information so this can happen.  Also, student who have thrown up must stay home a full 24 hours before returning to school.  If you child thrown up at night they CAN NOT come to school the next day.  This is to ensure all our students and staff can stay as healthy as possible.  Also, do not give your child medication to mask cold, cough or flu symptoms.  These medications wear off and we are then dealing with an unwell child at school. Medication cannot be sent to school unless accompanied by a doctor's note and must be kept in the office so other students don't access it.  Please see the office for more details if needed.

There have been a few questions regarding birthday celebrations at school. Please refer to my first Welcome back email about this.

Students celebrating birthdays at school will be recognized by their classroom teacher in a way that is appropriate for their grade level. Families may choose to send small, store-bought cupcakes for the class to share. Store-bought treats help us ensure ingredient information is available and reduce potential risks for students with allergies.

To help keep all students safe and ensure celebrations remain simple and equitable, we will not accept pizzas, homemade treats, or goodie bags for classroom celebrations.
